North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Autumn Gala 2026 (DBLM Steam)

#northyorkshiremoorsrailway #4079PendennisCastle #nymr Extended tracks capturing the brilliance of GWR 4079 Pendennis Castle during its visit to the NYMR, together with 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, LSWR T3 No 563, NELPG's 2392, 926 Repton, Lambton Tank No 29 and Black Five 44806 - captured in action at the annual steam gala, during the first two days - Thursday 24th and Friday 25th of September. The Castle has legendary status in the steam world, alongside other icons such as Sir Nigel Gresley and Flying Scotsman. But throughout the four days of this magnificent event it was Pendennis Castle that possibly overshadowed everything else - with the competition extremely high from the ever-faithful Gresley and the most elegant Victorian gem, the T3, visiting courtesy of the Swanage Railway, I remember witnessing the awesome sound of this single-chimneyed Castle at a Steamtown Open Day (possibly in 1976) prior to its overhaul and trip to Australia - a day when tubes were blown and everything went eerily quiet! And then there was its last run before Australia, remembered well from the ascent of Hatton Bank - and thinking we would never see it again in the UK. More recently, since its rebuild by at Didcot, I've been privileged to witness 4079 in starring roles at Keighley and on the Churnet Valley line. But nothing matched the deafening roaring sound and great performance of this superb locomotive during its stay on the Moors. The video extracts here can't possibly do justice to the monumental sounds created in coping with the 1/49 gradient between Grosmont and Goathland - and I'm afraid my normally brilliantly efficient external microphone found it all too much! When what was loud became very loud - and then quite scarily deafening - there had to be some level of distortion in the captured sound - although I think I've managed to limit some of the issue. More than ever, unlike many other videographers who opt for shorter clips, close ups and everything visual - I remain in the more 'dinosaur' brigade opting to capture the passage of the train 'in the environment' - it influences where I go and then length of 'the moment'.
