4079 - The Loudest Loco Of All ! Visits The NYMR Annual Gala 2026

This year's gala at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway would see arguably the loudest steam locomotive ? currently in operation across the UK steam preservation scene. The loco in question is Great Western Castle class 4079 Pendennis Castle. The sound of a single chimney Castle echoed across the Moors especially on the 1/49 gradient and having travelled behind it on the final day, I was treated to the spectacle from all angles. The only downside to the Castle's visit was its ongoing steam leak which still hasn't been sorted and unfortunately takes the shine of its visit, in my opinion. While 4079 takes the plaudits for its vocal range, there was two more visiting engines to wow the crowds. making its first visit to the NYMR was the immaculate LSWR T3 courtesy of the Swanage railway. No 563 is the last member of its class in service. The final visitor and one which has deep ties to the NYMR is LNER 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, the A4 makes another trip back to the Moorsline where its spent many happy years.
