For generations, people in Devon drank cider as an ordinary part of daily life.
But across the county, people were also suffering from a strange illness marked by severe abdominal pain, constipation, weakness, and in some cases paralysis.
The condition became known as the Devonshire colic.
For years, doctors blamed the cider itself — its acidity, its roughness, or something peculiar about Devon. But in 1767, physician Sir George Baker began asking a different question.
Why was the disease so common in Devon when people in other English cider regions, especially Herefordshire, were also drinking large amounts of cider?
The answer led investigators away from the apples and toward the equipment used to make the drink.
Baker found evidence that lead was being used in parts of Devon cider-making apparatus, including joints, repairs, and some linings. He also compared cider from different regions and used the chemical tests available at the time to look for lead.
What emerged was one of the most fascinating medical detective stories of the eighteenth century:
patient symptoms → regional pattern → cider association → Devon vs Herefordshire → cider-making equipment → lead contamination
But the discovery did not instantly end the problem.
Baker’s conclusions were challenged. Critics defended older explanations, questioned his evidence, and worried about damage to Devon’s cider trade. Production practices changed gradually, and there was no single immediate national ban that made the problem disappear overnight.
This documentary explores how physicians moved from a mysterious regional disease to a hidden contamination route inside an ordinary food-production system — and why recognizing the cause was easier than changing the system that created it.
The Ailing Archive explores the hidden history of medicine, disease, hygiene, public health, food contamination, toxic products, and the everyday systems that shaped human health before modern medicine.
