Before widespread pasteurization and effective control of tuberculosis in cattle, an ordinary glass of milk could carry a hidden infection from a dairy herd into a city home. This documentary explores the history of bovine tuberculosis — Mycobacterium bovis — and how contaminated unpasteurized milk became an important route of infection, especially for children. As cities expanded and milk distribution networks grew, the danger was no longer limited to one sick cow or one farm. The milk supply itself could become a transmission system. Public-health investigators in Britain and the United States began tracing tuberculosis through dairy herds, municipal milk supplies, and childhood disease. But the science was not immediately settled. Researchers debated how important bovine tuberculosis really was in humans, while cities struggled with questions of regulation, cattle testing, producer resistance, and whether “clean raw milk” or pasteurization was the better solution. This is not the story of all tuberculosis spreading through milk. Most human tuberculosis was caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This story is specifically about bovine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis and the historical danger of contaminated unpasteurized dairy. The deeper story is about the system behind the glass: infected cattle → raw milk → urban distribution → child exposure And the solution was not one single invention. Safer milk emerged through multiple layers of protection, including pasteurization, cattle testing, control of infected herds, dairy inspection, improved handling, and stronger public-health regulation.
