📖 Get Hazel's Cleaning Book, every measure and method my mother made me write down: https://hazelscleaningbook.com A dull patch on the counter that no cloth will touch. Orange freckles in a steel sink. A brown ring in a sheet, and a floor plank lifting at the edge. It was never your fault, honey. None of it is dirt. Each one is a cure that reacted with your house instead of the mess, and it never shows on the day you do it. FIRST, READ YOUR SURFACES: set a drop of plain water on your grout, your counter and your floor, and leave it five minutes. If it beads, the surface is sealed. If it darkens and soaks in, it is porous and will drink whatever you put on it. To check stone for acid, one drop of vinegar somewhere nobody will ever look, thirty seconds, then wipe it. A dull spot means no acid on that stone, ever. THE FOUR MISTAKES 1. Acid on stone. Vinegar and lemon etch marble, limestone, travertine and cement grout. Use warm water and a few drops of dish soap 2. Chlorine bleach where it does not belong. It sets rust, pits stainless, dissolves wool and silk, and darkens aluminum. Rust wants an acid: lemon and salt in the sun on white cotton 3. Heat on anything that came out of a body. Blood, milk, egg and sweat cook in hot water and the dryer. Cold water from the back, enzyme detergent for twenty minutes, and look at it wet before the dryer 4. Water on anything unsealed. Laminate swells at the joints and does not go back down. No steam mop on wood THE NEVERS: acid on marble or cement grout. Bleach on rust, stainless, aluminum or wool. Heat before you have looked at it wet. And NEVER bleach with anything. Bleach and an acid together make chlorine gas, so rinse and dry before you switch. THE HONEST LIMIT: cleaning cannot undo these four. A single light etch on a polished counter will often buff out with marble polishing powder and a felt pad. A whole dull floor will not. A swollen plank can only be swapped. THE HABIT: wring the mop until it barely drips, and wet the cloth, not the surface. Two minutes finding out beats an afternoon apologizing to a countertop. Tonight, read your drop and turn every bottle under the sink to its back label. Then tell me in the comments which of the four you found already living in your house, what county you are in, and how old your house is. I read every single one. #cleaningmistakes #cleaninghacks #cleaning
