Why is the Gospel of John so different from Matthew, Mark and Luke? No birth story, no parables, no exorcisms, no Last Supper. We look at what John leaves out, what only he gives us, the date problem scholars still debate, and the two verses where John explains why. Matthew, Mark and Luke tell the story of Jesus in a way that lines up again and again. John does not. In this video we follow the evidence, from the "I AM" statements to the Passover puzzle, to find out what is going on, and what the early church said about it. ▶ THE GOSPEL OF JOHN (our earlier video): [LINK] ▶ SUBSCRIBE to Letters And Light: [CHANNEL LINK] WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • What John leaves out (birth story, parables, exorcisms, the Last Supper words, Gethsemane) • What only John gives us (Cana, Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Lazarus, foot washing, the seven "I AM" statements) • The Passover and Last Supper date puzzle, and three serious proposals • Whether the Jesus of the first three gospels says anything like John's Jesus • What Clement of Alexandria said about the "spiritual gospel" • The two verses (John 20:30–31) that explain the purpose of the whole book CHAPTERS 0:00 Four witnesses, one event 1:28 Four cameras, one story 2:53 What John leaves out 5:37 What only John gives us 8:43 The date problem 12:03 Does Jesus sound the same? 14:41 Why John wrote it this way 16:42 Contradiction or complement? 18:12 The sentence most people skip SCRIPTURE REFERENCED IN THIS VIDEO John 1:1, 1:14, 1:29 | John 2 | John 2:22 | John 3 | John 4 | John 6:35, 6:53–56 | John 8:12 | John 9 | John 10:6 | John 11, 11:35 | John 12:27 | John 13:4–15, 13–17 | John 14:26 | John 17 | John 18:6, 18:10, 18:28 | John 19:14, 19:36 | John 20:28, 20:30–31 | John 21:11, 21:25 Matthew 5:14 | Matthew 11:27 | Mark 1:23–26 | Mark 2:5–7 | Mark 6:50 | Mark 11 | Mark 14:12, 14:61–62 | Luke 1:1–4 | Luke 22:42–44 | Genesis 1:1 | Exodus 12:46 SOURCES AND FURTHER READING (confirm before publishing) Eusebius, Church History 6.14.7 (Clement on the "spiritual gospel") Richard Bauckham, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses | Craig Blomberg, The Historical Reliability of John's Gospel | D.
