Hi friends. welcome back to the compound. This week I picked six pounds of tomatoes from the raised bed and made Italian tomato sauce completely from scratch for the very first time. Peeled them, pulled the seeds, blended it down, and let it simmer with basil and oregano and a little salt until it was thick. Then I roasted a spaghetti squash and ate the whole thing outside. There is something about eating a meal you grew from a seed that I cannot explain to you. You just have to do it once. Nobody tells you that a pot of sauce can make you look back at your whole life. But somewhere in the middle of all that peeling it hit me that everything I did to grow these tomatoes is the same thing I've been doing to rebuild my life at fifty. The digging. The layers. The quiet season where nothing looks like it's working yet. I wrote the whole story this week on my Substack. It's called "What Homemade Tomato Sauce Taught Me About Midlife," and it's a story about tomatoes that's not really about tomatoes.
