This bhajan has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Raag Yaman. But I have composed it in Raag Charukeshi, since it brings out the feeling of viraha - the pain of separation from the beloved - quite effectively. Meera's beloved is no earthly human. He is Krishna himself. She spent her entire life pining away for him, and in the process, gave the world so many gems of exquisite poetry. This song is one such. She wrote in one of the Rajasthani languages. However, the popular versions of her songs are largely in Braj Bhasha, with some traces of Rajasthani still noticeable. Lyrics: kiṇ saṅg khelūn̐ holī piyā choṛ gaye hain̐ akelī māṇik-motī sab ham choṛe, gal men̐ pahanī selī bhojan-bhavan bhalo nahin̐ lāge, piyā kāran bha’ī akelī mohe dūrī kyon̐ melī ab tum prīt aur son̐ joṛī, ham se karī kyon̐ pahelī bahu din bīte, ajahun̐ na āye, lagā rahī tālā-belī kiṇ biramāye helī śyām binā jiyaḍo murjhāve, jaise jal bin belī mīrā ke prabhu! darsan dījo janam-janam kī celī daras bin khaṛī duhelī Translation: With whom will I play Holi? My beloved has left me alone and gone away I have let go of all my rubies and pearls Instead, I wear a tulsi necklace (selī) on my neck Food, the house – none of this interests me Because of my lover, I am all alone Why have I been distanced? (To Krishna) Now you seem to have given your love to someone else Why do you keep me in suspense? So many days have passed, still you have not come I am getting restless (To the sakhi) O my friend! Who is causing him to be delayed? Without Shyam (Krishna), my heart wilts away Like a creeper without water O Lord of Meera! Please appear before me! I am your servant since several births Without your presence, I am standing in sadness
