In this video, I take on the restoration of a vintage BP hand-crank oil dispenser pump originally used for dispensing motor and gear oil at service stations and workshops.
Before sealed, single-use plastic oil bottles became industry standard in the 1970s and 1980s, gas stations, mechanic garages, and farm depots relied on bulk oil storage and manual dispensing systems.
Portable oil filler pumps (often called lubesters or oil canister dispensers) like this PB unit were an essential daily tool. Mounted atop a dedicated oil reservoir drum, the manual rotary crank mechanism allowed mechanics to quickly and accurately pump heavy motor oil, gear lube, or transmission fluid directly into glass measuring bottles or straight into vehicle crankcases.
Major oil brands like BP, Shell, Mobil, and Castrol prominently featured branded portable dispensers on service station forecourts throughout the mid-20th century. Today, these sturdy cast-iron and aluminum mechanical pumps stand as iconic pieces of vintage petroliana history.
