Leaving Black Tree behind, we cross the crystal clear river once again, refill our water bottles, and push deeper into the valley. The terrain is still relentless, forcing us to climb successive spurs and drop into boggy gullies between them always in search of the path of least resistance. Towering ancient trees surround us, but the old enemy soon makes an appearance. Bush lawyer, armed with razor sharp hooks and barbs, clings to clothing and packs while tearing at any exposed skin. One bad encounter can leave its mark for the rest of the expedition. Yet scattered among the roughest sections are moments of extraordinary beauty. At one point we walked into a vast clearing of destruction where a fallen giant has torn through the forest, leaving a scene that looks as though a bomb has gone off. As we work our way higher at an almost exponentially steeper trajectory the terrain suddenly changes. A familiar landmark, where a fallen tree has ripped its roots from the earth, signals the entrance to a spectacular stretch of forest filled with towering trees and lush ferns. We follow it toward the river, where an unexpected smell of whisky reveals that most of our celebratory rations have unfortunately leaked away. After sorting the problem, we cross another beautiful section of river and arrive at a waypoint we call Emergency Camp. This place holds memories of a previous expedition, where fading daylight and dangerous terrain forced us to stop wherever we could find enough flat ground to pitch a tent. Returning here feels significant. We're still deep in the wilderness, but the hardest sections of the route are finally behind us. Ahead, the valley begins to open up, the terrain eases, and the promise of spectacular scenery gives us a welcome change of pace as the Mystery Lake mission continues..
