Three days after the dive, the team started hauling up the line — not to recover anyone, just to collect the decompression tanks still clipped along it. The body came up with the rope. It was wrapped several times around both forearms and around the valves of his side-mounted cylinders. Not snagged. Wound, turn over turn, in a pattern the men who reconstructed the dive said could not have happened by accident. His mask was in place. One of his side tanks was completely full, the regulator still stowed. There was no regulator in his mouth. The diver was Sheck Exley — a high school math teacher from Florida and the man widely regarded as the father of modern cave diving. In the era when flooded caves were killing divers at a rate nobody had named yet, he collected the fatalities, took each one apart, and wrote the rulebook: Basic Cave Diving, A Blueprint for Survival.
