STEAMING COILS
Steaming Coils was an influential 1980s avant-garde and experimental art-rock group formed in Los Angeles, active within the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) subculture. Led by multi-instrumentalist Brad Laner (who later founded the alternative/shoegaze band Medicine) alongside David Chrisman, the group featured a loose, revolving collective of musicians including members of solid sound-art groups like Solid Eye and Los Angeles Free Music Society icons. Their music combined absurd, surrealist songwriting with tape manipulation, microtonal acoustics, unhinged improvisation, and dense multi-layered arrangements. Across their key trio of cult albums—Never Creak (1986), The Tarkington Table (1987), and Breaded (recorded 1988, released 1991)—they crafted a distinctive sound that bridged outsider art-pop, avant-jazz, and experimental tape collage.
