I travelled from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro by overnight sleeper bus, but the journey didn't go exactly as planned. I accidentally ended up in Itaboraí and had to take another bus to finally reach Rio. After arriving, I stayed in a very unusual hostel that looked like a dark old castle, then went out to explore the city. One of the biggest things I noticed was the feeling of safety. Before visiting Rio, several people warned me to be careful, and after spending time there I personally felt more uneasy than I had in São Paulo and some other cities I visited. In this vlog, I show you what I actually experienced on the streets, the areas I visited, the atmosphere during the day and evening, and why I personally felt that Rio required more caution. I also visit the famous *Escadaria Selarón (Selarón Steps)* in Lapa, the colourful staircase created by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, and later head to the beach to watch the sunset. This is **not a claim that every part of Rio is unsafe**. It is my personal travel experience, combined with practical observations from my visit. Official travel advice also warns travellers about theft and pickpocketing in several popular Rio areas, including Copacabana, Ipanema, Lapa and Santa Teresa.
