Andrew Isaac Griffin, 34, is accused of murdering his former business partner, Thomas Strussion, and Strussion’s wife, Angela, inside their Belmont County, Ohio, home on September 21, 2021.
Thomas, 52, and Angela, 49, Strussion owned Salsa Joe’s restaurants in the Ohio Valley. Griffin, originally from Oklahoma, became involved in the restaurant business with Thomas in 2020, helping establish a second Salsa Joe’s location in Wheeling, West Virginia. Griffin reportedly returned to Oklahoma several weeks before the murders.
On September 21, 2021, firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the Strussions’ home on Trails End Drive near Belmont. Inside, they discovered the couple deceased, along with their three dogs. Investigators determined that Thomas and Angela had been shot and that their home had deliberately been set on fire.
Prosecutors allege Griffin traveled from Oklahoma to Ohio, murdered the couple, set the house on fire, and returned to Oklahoma. Investigators spent more than three years examining cellphone records, travel information, and other evidence across several states. Griffin was eventually arrested in Hilo, Hawaii, on February 16, 2025, and extradited to Ohio the following month.
Griffin faces 14 counts, including 12 counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated arson, and one count of aggravated burglary. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Griffin has pleaded not guilty, and no definitive motive has been publicly established.
Judge Christopher Berhalter
State: Kevin Flanagan and Chris Kinsler
Defense: Sam Shamansky and Kate Clark (Samuel H. Shamansky Law Office, Columbus, Ohio)
Jurors are also expected to visit the crime scene and a cellphone tower relevant to the investigation. The trial is expected to last approximately eight court days.
If Griffin is convicted of aggravated murder with the required death-penalty specifications, the jury will proceed to a separate penalty phase to consider whether to recommend death or a life sentence.
Under Ohio law, the possible sentences include:
Death penalty
Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole
Life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 25 years
Life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 30 years
