The Panama Canal did more than connect two oceans. It shortened global shipping routes, helped reshape trade between Asia and the U.S. East Coast, and became one of the world’s most important economic machines.
But the canal does not run on seawater. Its locks depend on freshwater stored in Gatun Lake—and changing rainfall, competing water demand, and drought have exposed a vulnerability its original builders never designed for.
This documentary explains how the Panama Canal was built, how its gravity-fed locks lift ships across a continent, how it makes money, and why water is now its defining constraint. Historical drought restrictions are identified by date; the canal is operating and adapting, not “closed” or “finished.”
