Welcome to lesson 2 of “Afrikaans for All” illustrated language course. “Alfabet en uitspraak in Afrikaans” is part of more than 20 lessons guiding non-Afrikaans speakers to become fluent in Afrikaans. This is the most neglected, misunderstood and most underestimated part in South African schools. The Afrikaans alphabet is not taught – drilled and applied in Afrikaans lessons in class. LEARNERS – no one - can spell Afrikaans with the English alphabet or the other way around. Imagine learning Greek (of which I have experience) trying to spell a Greek word using the English alphabet. Let’s take an example: “earth” in English is “γη” in Greek and is spelled: “gamma eta”. English neither has a “gamma”, nor an “eta”. See my point. So, Learners, Teachers, Parents, Everyone: When you learn Afrikaans, familiarize yourself with the Afrikaans alphabet and spell in Afrikaans only. This is vital. If you managed to get your learners this far, you have equipped them with a sound understanding of language acquisition. Beware of transcriptions. Many times, they create more confusion than clarity. TEACHERS, here is a tool to make your job easier and fill the gaps that previous teachers left for you to fix. All lessons are chapterised.
