Your learner survey says 93% of learners are satisfied with support. Reassuring? Perhaps. But before drawing a conclusion, there’s another question worth asking: Who isn’t represented in that evidence? In this video, I work through a practical RTO self-assurance activity called Look for the Missing Voice. Using a fictional RTO, fictional learner survey data and sample withdrawal conversations, we explore how evidence can be completely accurate while still giving us an incomplete picture of what people are experiencing. We look at: • why the people who respond to feedback may not represent everyone experiencing the system • how apparently strong learner satisfaction results can hide missing perspectives • why learners who withdraw or disengage may be particularly absent from traditional feedback mechanisms • how to identify whose voice is missing from the evidence you rely on • why sending another survey isn't always the best solution • how withdrawal conversations can reveal information that standard feedback doesn't • the difference between knowing support exists and feeling able to ask for it • how timing can affect whether learner support is effective • why missing voices aren't necessarily dissatisfied voices • how hearing from a different group can confirm, challenge or complicate your understanding The activity itself is simple: Choose one source of information you regularly rely on. Then ask: Who usually provides this information? Who rarely does? Whose experience might be missing? Why might they not be contributing? How else could we understand their experience? And finally: Did hearing from a different voice change our understanding? ☕ This video is based on Card 18: Look for the Missing Voice from my 20 Self-Assurance Activities for RTOs. The full set contains 20 practical activities designed to help RTOs investigate what is actually happening across their organisation, gather evidence, test assumptions and identify opportunities for improvement. They're available as a Pay What You Want resource: https://buymeacoffee.com/cluedineduca... These activities aren't designed to become another checklist. Choose them based on the risks, priorities and questions that matter to your RTO. Because self-assurance isn't about proving everything is working. It's about finding out whether it actually is. All RTOs, data, learner comments and scenarios used in this video are fictional and have been created for discussion and professional learning purposes.
