On a clear Sunday morning I decided to head over to Palm Street and do some railfanning for the day. This crossing in particular is very interesting mainly because of its location. You have a long range of vision of the tracks to the south into Downtown and crossings with horns to the north as well as a trolley station, making it ideal for railfanning. Another pretty amazing thing is that you can see tons of airplane activity from the San Diego International Airport, taking off and landing, although there was lots of engine noise because of the proximity. This crossing is the last horn crossing for all southbound trains and the first for all northbound trains. From here the rest of the crossings into, in, and around Downtown are all Quiet Zones (QZ ends at Park Blvd southward). This continues my series of railfanning trips to four San Deigo crossings, those of which were unaffected by the Quiet Zone back in 2012. Train 1 : Coaster #680 with CabCar #2302 & F40PHM-2C #2104. Nice K5LA on CabCar #2302 ! Still sounds pretty good ! (Note the extra car in the consist for more passenger capacity) Train 2 : Amtrak 769 with CabCar #6908 & F59PHI #462. Train 3 : Coaster #681 with F40PHM-2C #2104 & CabCar #2302. You can see Coaster #681 approaching all the way from Downtown ! Train 4 : Amtrak 564 with F59PHI #455 & CabCar #6903. Train 5 : Amtrak 573 with CabCar #6903 & F59PHI #455. Nice horn action from the engineer ! Train 6 : Amtrak 1566 with F59PHI #454 & CabCar #6901. Nice horn action from the engineer ! He looked pretty happy as he went through the crossing ! Thanks for Watching !
