4 UPSC Failures, 30+ Exams Failed… Then AIR 584 | Pravin’s Inspiring UPSC Story

What happens when you fail UPSC Prelims four times, fail more than 30 other competitive exams, lose your father, and still refuse to give up? This is the inspiring story of Kolape Pravin Uttamrao, who grew up in drought-hit Mitki village in Maharashtra’s Sangli district and eventually secured AIR 584 in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025. Pravin did not have an elite educational background or the resources to move to Delhi for preparation. He travelled nearly 25 km every day from his village to college and prepared for UPSC from Karad. His journey was filled with setbacks. He failed UPSC Prelims four times and could not clear more than 30 other competitive examinations. During the COVID period, he also lost his father to kidney failure. With little financial support, his mother worked as a migrant agricultural labourer, cutting sugarcane and working in other people’s fields so that her sons could continue their education. Pravin continued preparing through self-study. He solved 10,000+ MCQs, studied topper copies and practised Mains answers on plain paper. After initially scoring 135 marks in the UPSC interview, he changed his approach, worked on self-acceptance and eventually improved his interview score to 195 marks. The result: AIR 584 in UPSC CSE 2025. But for Pravin, the rank was not just his achievement. It belonged to his mother too. At his felicitation, he reportedly placed his mother on an elephant and told people to look at her rather than him, saying that anyone wanting to learn resilience should learn it from his mother.
