It is half past five on a Wednesday evening in November 1953 in a small market town in Shropshire. The ironmonger closes first — Mr. Beechey carrying the brooms and the rope and the galvanised buckets inside from the pavement and drawing the dark green CLOSED blind across the door. Then Mrs. Hartington at the draper's, drawing the holland blind across the bolt of dark green wool in the window. Then the chemist, locking the dispensary and putting on his hat. Then the general stores. The bakery has been closed since two — the last loaf sold at noon, the SOLD OUT card in the window, the bare paper doily on the glass stand where the sponge cake was. The post office closed at five so that Edna Price could catch the bus to Shrewsbury for a dental appointment. The last bus south stops at half past five and does not wait. Five people board it. The high street watches it go. By six the church strikes the hour and the Wheatsheaf opens and there is no one on the pavement from one end of the high street to the other. The gas lamps make their amber circles on the wet stone flags. The solicitor's black Austin is still parked near the market cross. The war memorial stands in the small square. The shops are closed and dark and the town behind the high street is doing what it always does on a Wednesday evening — quietly, in its kitchens and its hearths and its pub — without requiring anything from the high street at all. This is a long-form geography sleep story for the anxious mind. Not a story. Not a drama. Just a calm British narrator describing one specific unremarkable Wednesday evening in a Shropshire market town — every shop, every closing blind, every person on the street — until the last light goes out and the high street is exactly what a market town high street is on a Wednesday evening in November. Empty. And without any sense that it minds. 🎧 Best with headphones. Best in the dark. Best when you stop trying. — — — The Nox Project produces long-form audio and video sleep content for the anxious, the overthinkers, and the minds that race at night.
