🌱 Evening Descending Mercy— Bhagavad Gita 13.11— The Rescue of Sri Guru: From the Ocean of Illusion to the Ocean of Devotion — 09/15/2026 Sadhu-Guru: The Mercy Who Rows Us Across the Ocean of Illusion Bhagavān has given us the components of knowledge, and choosing that knowledge to come toward Him requires great determination. But the illusory effect is so insurmountable. The jīva may want to come toward Bhagavān when experiencing misery. But when fleeting pleasure comes through the body, senses, and mind, that pleasure becomes very attractive. The five senses and mind are constantly seeking it, while the jīva is already deeply conditioned by the “I and my” effect. Therefore, even when the jīva wants to come out of misery, moving toward Bhagavān can seem almost impossible. The desire to choose knowledge and come toward Him can be so small and flickering. We hear Bhagavān speaking about these components of knowledge and think, “Yes, I will choose this knowledge.” But then life begins. When the senses receive a little relief and fleeting pleasure, do we still want to choose Bhagavān? Where is the strength to say no to illusion? Where is that strength in the jīva? That is why the jīva has to be taken to Bhagavān, and Śrī Guru gives us prapatti. When we see Śrī Guru as the representative of Bhagavān, coming to save us and take us toward Him, our surrender to Śrī Guru is surrender to Bhagavān. Everything needed to move toward these components of knowledge gradually comes within us. Śrī Guru makes us practice them. It is like being in a boat. We may be sitting in the boat, but the anchor is still attached to the bank. We cannot move even a little. We cannot row ourselves across. But when Śrī Guru, Sadhu-Guru, comes and sits in the boat, He rows it and takes us to the other side. Such is the position of Śrī Guru. He is like an auspicious cloud showering soothing mercy into this panic-stricken heart and illusory life. He is always with Bhagavān, engaged in loving service—in Nāma, in Śrī Vigraha, and in the heart of every living being. He sees Bhagavān everywhere and relishes bhakti-rasa. What is impossible for the jīva to accomplish alone becomes possible through the mercy of Sadhu-Guru. The mercy of Bhagavān is clearly coming to us as the mercy of Sadhu-Guru. When we become firmly convinced, “I cannot even row this boat. I cannot remove the anchor binding me to the material world, what to speak of crossing this ocean of misery and illusion,” then we understand how much we need the rescue that is Sadhu-Guru. Therefore, we depend upon and lean upon the vāṇī, instructions, and shelter given by Sadhu-Guru. If we do not lean on what Sadhu-Guru is giving, how will we come out of this illusory world? Inside and outside, we are surrounded by an ocean of illusion—sometimes misery, sometimes fleeting happiness, sometimes a neutral feeling that everything is fine. These are simply different corners of the same ocean. How can we get out unless we enter the ocean of devotion? Who will put us there? Only Sadhu-Guru can take us from the ocean of illusion and place us in the ocean of devotion, where we can practice and relish bhakti-rasa. The Vaiṣṇavas are like desire-fulfilling trees and are very dear to Bhagavān. If we cannot see the Vaiṣṇavas in this way, it is an indication that we are still in illusion. This realization brings us to humility: “Oh my goodness, I am really nothing. I have no hope on my own. I have to hold on to my saving grace—Sadhu-Guru, who can place me in the ocean of devotion.” So we bow down to all the Vaiṣṇavas, take the dust from their lotus feet, place it upon our head, and dance in joy. Who makes this possible for us? What a beautiful mercy! The land of divine love is the groves of Vṛndāvana. Who can bring us there? Adhama-bandhu Śrī Guru, giving us Gaurāṅga and Kṛṣṇa, brings us toward that land. How wonderful—the land of divine love, where the vision is darśana of Śrī Rādhā and the service is in the mood of sakhi-anugatya, with the heart filled with love for Rādhā-Govinda. Can this happen? Yes, please. Yes, please. This is our prayer. This is our svarūpa. This is why we hold on to the lotus feet of Sadhu-Guru—because He gives us Gaurāṅga, gives us Kṛṣṇa, and puts us in the ocean of devotion. Very short summary: Our own strength to cross illusion is small and flickering. Sri Guru enters the boat and takes us toward Bhagavan. Sadhu-Guru’s vani and shelter are our rescue from the ocean of illusion. The Vaishnavas lead us into the ocean of devotion and divine love. We hold the lotus feet of Sadhu-Guru, praying for Vrindavana and Radha-Govinda. 🙏🙏
