North Dakota sits on top of one of the largest oil fields in America. Billions of dollars have been pumped out of its ground. So why does almost nobody live there?
When the Bakken oil boom hit, a quiet prairie state turned into one of the biggest oil producers in the US almost overnight. Workers poured in, small towns doubled in size, rent exploded and wages hit record highs. And yet North Dakota is still one of the emptiest states in the country, and many of the people who came for the oil have already left.
In this video we follow the money across the map: what lies under North Dakota, why all that oil wealth never turned into big cities, and how geography, brutal winters and the boom-and-bust cycle keep the state empty.
