In 1898, the United States took control of two tropical islands. Hawaii was annexed in July. Puerto Rico was handed over by Spain after the Spanish-American War. Same year, same flag, similar sugar economies. Today, Hawaii is one of the richest places in America. Puerto Rico earns a fraction of that and went through the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history. So what happened? In this video we follow the money and the map: statehood versus territory status, tourism and military spending, the tax breaks that built Puerto Rico's factories and then disappeared, the shipping rules both islands live under, and the debt crisis that changed everything. Two islands. One owner. Two completely different outcomes. 🗺️ Map & Wallet explains why some places get rich and others stay poor, through geography, history and money. 👉 Subscribe for new videos every week:    / @mapandwallet   📺 Watch next: Why Did Toronto Get Rich But Detroit Went Broke?    • Why Did Toronto Get Rich But Detroit Went ...   El Paso and Juárez Are 1 Mile Apart.
