In 2023 a historic drought nearly shut the Panama Canal. So what would happen if it closed completely?
In this hypothetical scenario we look at how the canal's locks and Gatun Lake actually work, the deadly French attempt and the American construction, the Canal Zone and the 1999 handover to Panama, why around 5% of the world's seaborne trade depends on it, the 2023–24 drought and the Rio Indio reservoir plan — and what a closure would mean: ships around Cape Horn, longer routes via Suez, the US rail "land bridge", and a huge hit to Panama's economy. Plus: could Nicaragua or Mexico's Interoceanic Corridor ever replace it?
⚠️ This is a hypothetical, educational video. The Panama Canal is open today.
