An anonymous caller told the Department for Work and Pensions they'd just seen a man on television. That was awkward, because the man in question had told the DWP he could manage a few yards at most, and had been drawing the highest rate of disability benefit on that basis since 2006. Investigators followed him for weeks. Then they followed him to a major arena, where they filmed him walking 500 yards to the door, chatting as he went, showing no difficulty at all - on his way in to work at a televised darts night. He had been convicted of benefit fraud once before. Also in this episode: the East London council that discovered a fraud running inside its own youth services. Staff who had never existed were invented, placed through a recruitment agency, and paid wages that went straight into the pockets of the people who signed the invoices. Three were jailed in 2012. The agency boss walked away from her first trial when the jury couldn't agree - and it took a computer the police had seized for something else entirely to finally prove what she'd known all along.
