Gashadokuro is a gigantic skeletal yokai from modern Japanese yokai culture, often depicted as an enormous skeleton formed from the bones and lingering resentment of the dead. Unlike many yokai whose origins can be traced to older folklore, Gashadokuro as it is known today took shape in the mid-20th century. Its famous visual image is also strongly associated with the enormous skeleton depicted in Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s 19th-century ukiyo-e work commonly known as “Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre.” However, the skeleton in Kuniyoshi’s original work was not itself called Gashadokuro; that connection developed later as the modern image of the yokai became established. Japanese Folklore Horror is a Shikisai series exploring the darker side of Japanese culture through sound — yokai, ghost stories, folklore, strange tales, and supernatural legends.
