On February 4th, 1975, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Haicheng in Liaoning Province, in northeast China. 2,041 people died in a region where the toll should have been far higher, because one county walked its entire population outdoors before dark. Seventeen months later and 250 miles (400 km) away, Tangshan came apart at 3:42 in the morning with no warning at all. The official death toll is 242,769.
