What Actually Makes a Tree Stump Rot?

What actually makes a tree stump rot? Once a tree dies, the stump doesn't simply disappear. Wood is an incredibly durable biological material made largely from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin—and nature has developed an entire community of organisms capable of slowly taking it apart. In this video, we're going to nerd out a little and look at the actual science behind tree stump decomposition. We'll look at how fungi colonize dead wood, how fungal hyphae and enzymes help break down the structure of wood, and why moisture, oxygen, temperature, nitrogen availability, and surface area can influence how quickly decomposition occurs. We'll also look at several real stumps in very different stages of decay—including a Blue Atlas cedar I cut down earlier this year and a massive old stump that's decomposing even while portions of its root system appear to still be producing new growth. Most importantly, we'll look at the difference between killing a stump and decomposing a stump. They aren't the same thing. Understanding the biology behind decomposition can help us work with the natural process instead of throwing random products like Epsom salt or rock salt onto a stump and potentially creating conditions that work against the organisms we're depending on to break that wood down. In the next video, we'll take this science and put it into practice by looking at ways we can create better conditions around a dead stump and potentially help nature move the decomposition process along.
