Before you start trying to kill a tree stump, there’s one question you need to answer first: WILL IT REGROW? A lot of stump-killing advice skips that step completely. People reach for rock salt, Epsom salt, copper nails, stump killer, Triclopyr ester, Tordon RTU, or some homemade “magic potion” without first figuring out whether the tree is even capable of stump sprouting or root suckering. In this video, I explain why killing a stump, removing a stump, and decomposing a stump are three completely different jobs — and why you may be wasting time and money trying to kill a stump that is already dead. Some trees can aggressively resprout after being cut down. Others, including many common conifers, may be finished the moment the tree is cut. The first step is identifying the tree and determining how that species responds after cutting. I’ll also show you where I apply cut-stump herbicides such as Triclopyr ester or Tordon RTU when treatment actually IS necessary, why I prefer treating a fresh cut, and why the living tissue around the outside of the stump is the important area to understand. If the stump isn’t going to regrow, stop trying to kill it and move on to the next problem: removal or decomposition.
