On December 9, 2023, Whitman County Sheriff's Deputy Petersen observed a vehicle traveling with no lights on at night. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and the 21-year-old driver is emotionally upset because she had just had an argument with her husband, who got out of the vehicle and started walking. Deputy Petersen happens to have a civilian ride along in the vehicle and when he went back to this vehicle to run the woman's information on his computer, the ride along recognizes the driver. In fact, the ride along claims she went to the driver's wedding. The woman admits to drinking and is asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests (FSTs), which includes a preliminary breath test (PBT). The result of the PBT is 0.114% BAC and the woman is arrested for DUI. She is taken to the Pullman Police Station in order to submit to an evidentiary breath test (EBT). After the EBT, she is transported to the Whitman County Jail for booking and to post bail. While leaving the Pullman Police Station, she and Deputy Petersen encounter her husband in the lobby of the police station. After several hours, the woman is released on $500 bail. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
