On February 1, 2025, Whitman County Sheriff's Deputy Petersen observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 19-year-old woman. She initially denied consuming alcohol, but when confronted with Deputy Petersen's observations during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, she admitted that she had taken a few sips of a mixed drink several hours earlier. She was asked to step out of the vehicle in order to perform the full battery of field sobriety tests. She also submitted to a portable breath test (PBT) and the result was 0.044% BAC, which is over the 0.02% legal limit for someone under 21-years-old. She was placed under arrest and was taken to the Pullman Police Department for an evidential breath test. The result of this test was 0.064% BAC. She was charged with Driver Under 21 Consuming Alcohol and was taken to the Whitman County Jail in order to post bail.
