The Pontiac Tempest: The Car With a Driveshaft Designed to Bend!
What if I told you Pontiac once built a car with a driveshaft that was actually designed to bend?
In the early 1960s, Pontiac introduced one of the most unusual engineering designs in American automotive history. Under the direction of engineers including John DeLorean, the 1961–1963 Pontiac Tempest featured a flexible driveshaft, nicknamed the "Rope Drive," along with a rear-mounted transaxle and independent rear suspension.
It was an ambitious attempt to improve weight distribution, passenger space, and handling in an American compact car.
In this video, we explore the history of the original Pontiac Tempest, its unusual drivetrain, the innovative four-cylinder engine, the legendary Super Duty racing versions, and how the Tempest eventually helped give birth to the Pontiac GTO.
We'll also revisit the famous courtroom testimony from the 1992 comedy *My Cousin Vinny*, where Mona Lisa Vito uses her knowledge of the Pontiac Tempest's independent rear suspension to help solve the case.
It's a fascinating chapter in American automotive history!
