BLESSEED Are All Who Take Refuge in Him | Psalm 2:12 | Sermon & Message *“Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” — Psalm 2:12* Psalm 2 begins with *rebellion**, but surprisingly, it ends with **refuge and blessedness**. The nations and rulers begin by saying, **“Let us burst their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us”* (Psalm 2:3). They want to escape God's authority. Yet the final words of the Psalm offer them another possibility: instead of running **from God**, they can run **to God**. The Hebrew expression is *אַשְׁרֵי כָּל־חוֹסֵי בוֹ (*ʾašrê kol-ḥôsê ḇô*) — “Blessed/Happy are all who take refuge in him.”* The verb *חָסָה (*ḥāsâ*)* means **to take refuge, seek shelter, or place oneself under protection**. Therefore, Psalm 2 does not have to end for the rebels with the iron rod, the broken vessel, or divine anger. God's warning opens the door to refuge. This creates a beautiful movement: *They began by running from God's authority; they are invited to end by running to God's protection.* Psalm 2:12 also connects beautifully with *Psalm 1:1**. Psalm 1 begins, **“Blessed is the person…”* and Psalm 2 ends, *“Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”* Together, these two Psalms introduce us to the blessed life. **Psalm 1 teaches us to listen to God through His instruction. Psalm 2 teaches us to trust God by taking refuge in Him. Psalm 1 asks, “Which way will you walk?” Psalm 2 asks, “Under whose rule will you live?”** The theme of refuge then continues throughout the Psalter. Immediately in Psalm 3, David is surrounded by enemies, but he declares, *“You, O LORD, are a shield around me”* (Psalm 3:3). Psalm 2 announces the principle; the following Psalms show us what taking refuge in God looks like in the experiences of life. Taking refuge in God is also the opposite of *self-reliance**. Human strength, political power, wealth, position, and even powerful rulers cannot provide ultimate security. Psalm 146:3 therefore warns, **“Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help.”* Because *YHWH alone truly reigns, YHWH alone is finally worthy of our refuge.* This also helps us understand the whole movement of Psalm 2: *Rebellion → Warning → Wisdom → Correction → Service → Submission → Refuge → Blessedness.* The rebels can become refugees. Those who wanted to throw off God's rule are invited to discover security **under His rule**. And that gives us the central message: *Psalm 2 begins with people trying to free themselves from God, but it ends with people being invited to find their safety in God.
