Three years ago, I had a small dream.
To hike Ben Nevis.
At the time, even that felt like something I probably couldn’t do. I’m scared of heights, I’m not the most active person, and although I love hiking, my idea of a long walk was nowhere near 17 km. 😂 I barely walk 1 km sometimes, so when I realised this was a 17 km round trip, I honestly thought… What have I signed myself up for? 😅
But this time, I decided to put my self-doubt aside and just try.
Not to prove anything to anyone.Just to prove something to myself.
We started at 6:30 in the morning. I took my time, going slowly and stopping whenever I needed to. My husband could have finished the climb much faster — he’s a much easier and faster hiker than me — but he stayed with me.
He waited. He encouraged me.He supported me when my legs were tired and I felt like I couldn’t take another step.
There were moments when I felt really bad that he had to wait for me, but honestly, I couldn’t have done this without him. ❤️
About 10 minutes before reaching the summit, I genuinely thought I was going to give up.
And then something beautiful happened.
Strangers.
Hikers who didn’t even know me stopped, encouraged me, told me to keep going and reminded me that I was almost there. Almost every person who saw me struggling gave me a little push when I needed it most.
And I loved that.
For those few hours, we were all just hikers looking after each other. No one cared how fast anyone was going. We were all there for the same reason — to keep moving forward.
Then, at around 12 noon, I reached the summit.
And I honestly couldn’t believe it.
I made it. 🥹🏔️
I was in tears.
I know Ben Nevis isn’t the biggest mountain in the world. I know this might not seem like the biggest achievement to many people.
But for me, this was huge.
I faced a fear.I pushed through my self-doubt.I did something I once thought I couldn’t do.
And standing at the top, I felt nothing but satisfied, grateful and incredibly proud of myself. ❤️
Then came the journey back down. 😂
My poor knees and ankles were absolutely done, but they deserve some credit too! We slowly made our way back and it took us around 3 hours to reach the starting point.
17 km.A very tired body.A very happy heart.
And a memory I know I’ll carry for the rest of my life.
Sometimes the biggest mountains aren’t the ones in front of us. They’re the ones we convince ourselves we can’t climb.
This time, I chose to believe I could. 🏔️❤️
