Extra, extra. A fire is still burning when the reporter leaves it to telephone the story in, and the paper is on the street before the bells stop ringing. That is the boast this 1919 Ford film opens with, and then it spends seven minutes showing you the machinery that makes the boast true.
It is the Detroit News, and the chain is complete. Copy prepared at the editorial desk. A Linotype operator working a keyboard like a typewriter while the machine casts a line of lead behind it. A stiff cardboard matrix pressed over the type and dried. Cylindrical stereotype plates cast from the matrix and clamped to the press. Then a battery of presses delivering four hundred and thirty-two thousand newspapers an hour.
The numbers keep coming and they are the best part. Half a ton of ink every twenty-four hours. Seventy-five tons of paper a day, each roll weighing fifteen hundred pounds and running six miles.
Then the film relaxes. Newsboys boxing on the pavement with a policeman refereeing while they wait for the baseball edition. The colour press where Mutt and Jeff and the Katzenjammer Kids come from. Reporters playing tennis on the roof. Women at a long table taking want ads over the telephone, promising to find somebody's dog.
