The title is not decoration. Audio Productions made this in 1936 for the American Iron and Steel Institute, and it is built like a piece of music rather than a lesson. The credits name the crew the way a feature would: cinematography by Don Malkames, ASC, script by Wm. Laub, editing by Sol S. Feuerman, musical score by Edwin C. Ludig. That was a real genre. In the 1930s the industrial film discovered that a mill was already cinema: the scale, the darkness, the light that comes from the metal itself rather than from any lamp. You get long held shots, cutting on rhythm, and a soundtrack doing the work of a narrator. Steelmaking is loud and repetitive and enormous, and the film treats those as musical properties. Watch the light. There is no lighting design in a shot of a pour. Everything you can see is being lit by molten iron, and the exposure was set by someone standing close enough to feel it. What you see a mill in full operation, staged as a dramatic sequence rather than a lecture blast furnace and stoves, the charging floor, a ladle pouring ingot moulds, a hot slab on the roll table, the bloom mill a works chemist at the bench, and men watching a pour the industrial film at its most confident The print Steel: A Symphony of Industry.
