Moritz Moszkowski - Piano Concerto in E Major, I. Moderato Performed by: Shen Congzhe, Luo Jiefu Moritz Moszkowski (1854–1925) was one of the most celebrated pianist-composers of the late 19th century. Born in Wrocław (then Breslau, Prussia), he studied in Dresden and later at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. Though admired as a virtuoso pianist for his dazzling technique and elegant touch, his true legacy lies in his compositions. He wrote more than 200 works, ranging from delicate piano miniatures to grand orchestral scores. He was also a revered teacher, and his students included the great pianist Josef Hofmann. The renowned pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski once remarked: "After Chopin, Moszkowski best understands how to write for the piano." While his music appears less frequently in concert halls today, Moszkowski was widely famous during his lifetime. Across Europe he was known as a true “composer-pianist”, admired for his ability to craft captivating melodies. Composed in 1898, Piano Concerto No. 2 in E major, Op. 59 marks the peak of Moszkowski's artistic maturity. After settling in Paris, he poured his creative energy into this ambitious 4 movement work, dedicating it to his former student Josef Hofmann. Moszkowski premiered the concerto himself on May 12, 1898 at Queen's Hall, performing the solo part to great acclaim. Tonight's performance features the first movement Moderato, which unfolds like a spirited drama shaped by strong contrasts between bold, confident passages and tender, song-like moments. It opens with a noble theme that sets a tone of quiet dignity and grandeur. At times the music feels like an animated conversation, full of wit and sparkle. At other moments it turns introspective, hinting at deeper emotions beneath the surface. Throughout the movement, there is a sense of forward momentum, as if the music is searching for something just beyond reach. The opening theme returns in various forms, sometimes triumphant, other times gentle, creating a feeling of anticipation and suggesting that this is only the beginning of a much larger story.
