Sergei Rachmaninoff - Suite No. 2, Op. 17, III: Romance Performed by: Tan Xiao Zhuang and Chu Wai Yin Kelly Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, and a notable figure of late Romanticism. Educated at the Moscow Conservatory, he was strongly influenced by the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Russian nationalist traditions, yet developed a distinctive voice marked by unique melodies, rich textures, and expressive lyricism. His music is known for its emotional intensity and colourful harmonies, a style he maintained even as 20th century trends shifted toward modernism. Suite No. 2 was written in 1901, and comprises of 4 contrasting movements. It blends brilliance with lyricism, showcasing the full expressive and technical possibilities of two pianos. The work highlights Rachmaninoff’s gift for expansive melodies, rich harmonic colour, and harmonious interplay between performers, balancing grandeur with moments of intimate expressiveness. Distinctive of the Romantic period, the third movement, Romance, brings the listener on a soulful yet turbulent emotional journey. It opens quietly with a yearning main theme that shifts between major and minor tonalities, accompanied by careful, subtle countermelodies. The theme repeats in a higher register, juxtaposed with duplet rhythms that generate momentum. After a peaceful return to the home key, the music suddenly moves into a different key in a sparse texture, signalling a transition into a new chapter. Rachmaninoff explores rhythmic displacement by placing unexpected emphasis on weak beats, bracing the listener for greater turbulence. The transition theme then evolves into a vivid, flowing passage, embellished by running passages trickling in between long melodic lines. Layered rhythms and voices intertwine, and echoes of the main theme emerge in the background. A similar transition section returns with heightened emotional intensity. Through ascending sequences and rich harmonies, the music reaches the triumphant climax before a joyful return of the transition’s theme.
