In Tutorial 6 of our STM32 programming series, we learn how to receive serial data from a computer and control the STM32 microcontroller using UART communication.
Using the STM32 NUCLEO-F446RE development board and STM32CubeIDE, we will send commands from a PC serial terminal to turn the onboard LED ON and OFF. We will also learn how to transmit confirmation messages from the microcontroller back to the computer.
Topics covered:
Introduction to UART data reception
USART2 configuration in STM32CubeIDE
PA2 (UART TX) and PA3 (UART RX)
Using HAL_UART_Receive()
Understanding UART timeout
Controlling the onboard LED on PA5
Sending responses using HAL_UART_Transmit()
Testing with Tera Term or PuTTY
Troubleshooting UART communication
Hardware: STM32 NUCLEO-F446RE
Software: STM32CubeIDE
Programming Language: Embedded C
Practical demonstration:
Send 1 from the PC to turn the LED ON.
Send 0 from the PC to turn the LED OFF.
Observe the STM32 response in the serial terminal.
This tutorial is suitable for students and beginners learning embedded systems and STM32 microcontroller programming through practical experiments.
In the next tutorials, we will continue learning STM32 peripherals step by step.
