Established in November 1909 (Meiji 42), it was the second modern public market in Tainan City following the West Market. Portions of its original structure remain preserved within the market to this day. Due to the numerous temples nearby, it was humorously nicknamed "Iau-kuí-tiânn" in its early days. The main entrance is on Qingnian Road, while another entrance on Wanchang Street provides a surface parking lot. During the Qing dynasty, the area around the East Market was densely populated within the Taiwan Prefectural City walls, owing to the presence of many temples and official facilities such as the Taiwan Prefecture Office. Following the establishment of the West Market in 1905 (Meiji 38), residents in the eastern part of the city found it inconvenient to travel there for daily shopping. Consequently, in 1909 (Meiji 42), the Tainan District Office built the "East Market" (popularly called "East Market") near the fish and vegetable market at Disanyuanhuijing (Yuedi Temple) Street. The market was constructed with a sturdy steel roof frame, vendor stalls made of Formosan cypress (hinoki), and terrazzo walls that remain visibly aged today. A light railway once ran in front of the market, connecting it to Rende and Guanmiao. Beyond fulfilling daily shopping needs, the East Market was also responsible for supplying fodder for cattle, horses, and sheep to meet the demands of the nearby Shanchuantai livestock cart station and the Japanese Kempeitai (military police) detachment.
