On November 24, 1971, a man in a dark suit bought a ticket on Northwest Orient Flight 305, handed a flight attendant a note, and hijacked the plane for $200,000 and four parachutes. Somewhere over southwest Washington, in the dark and the rain, he jumped from the back stairs. He has never been identified. This is the whole case, drawn: the note, the swap in Seattle, the jump, what he left behind, the search, the money a boy found on a riverbank, and what changed in air travel because of him.
