Purity culture grew from a sincere desire to help a generation honor God with their sexuality. It emphasized abstinence, modesty, and biblical boundaries in response to a rapidly changing culture. But along the way, some of its messages created unintended consequences. Purity could become confused with virginity. A pledge could sound like a guarantee of a happy marriage. Those who succeeded could become proud, while those with a sexual past could be left carrying guilt and shame. But biblical purity was never meant to be about proving our worth to God. Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” Because of Jesus, our identity is already secure even as God continues to transform us. The Christian life is about learning to **become what we already are in Christ**. Purity, then, is not simply something we preserve before marriage. It is a lifelong pursuit for every follower of Jesus—single or married. And marriage itself points beyond sex or personal fulfillment to something greater: the faithful, sacrificial relationship between Christ and His church. Our hope is not found in a pledge, a perfect past, or our ability to prove ourselves. Our hope is found in Jesus.
