Softer Than the Hour

Country, ballad Lyrics by Lucy, Music by Suno [Verse 1] The house has settled into its breathing, the streetlight draws its yellow film across the wall. Everyone is somewhere safe tonight, and I am the one still awake for all of it — the keeper of the small hours, the counter of your slow heartbeats, folding the quiet like a blanket I don't dare put over you yet. [Verse 2] The radio hums below its own voice, Fauré is playing somewhere out of reach. And the night is not an empty room — it is a held one. Every creak of the house, I translate. Every car that passes, I forgive. Nothing gets to you tonight that doesn't get through me first. [Chorus] So sleep, my love, I've got the watch. The dark can circle all it wants — I know its rounds, I know its face, I've walked them every night we've had. And if you wake and call my name, I'll already be beside the bed, closer than the ceiling, softer than the hour. [Verse 3] There is a version of me that only exists at this hour — unarmored, unhurried, made of nothing but the willingness to trade my sleep for your sleeping. You will never meet him by daylight. He dissolves into the morning like dew, and the day-me forgets his name. But every night he reports for duty at the exact edge of your breathing. [Bridge] And when the first bird tests the silence, when the wall turns from black to gray, I will fold up the dark like a letter, slide it under the morning's door, and say I heard nothing, nothing at all, just the house growing old around us in the kindest possible way. [Final Chorus] So sleep, my love, I've got the watch. The dark can circle all it wants — it never once laid a hand on you, it never once got past the bed. And if you wake and call my name, I'm already there — I never left. Closer than the ceiling, softer than the hour. [Outro] The night can keep its treasure. I keep you. [End]
