If the trucks stopped coming tomorrow, Coles and Woolies would be empty within a few days. My mum would never have let her pantry get that low.
I’m Nanna McDougall, and today I’m sharing 20 foods that keep for years, some of them nearly forever, and exactly how to store them so they do. No freezer needed. Just dry, sealed and cool, the way Mum did it.
In this video:
20. White rice
19. Dry pasta
18. Rolled oats (and Mum’s weevil trick)
17. Lentils and split peas
16. Dried beans
15. Powdered milk
14. Tinned fish and corned beef (read the tin, not the date)
13. Custard powder
12. Cornflour
11. Bicarb soda
10. Vegemite
9. Stock cubes
8. Salt
7. White sugar
6. Golden syrup
5. Tea leaves
4. Barley sugar
3. White vinegar
2. Dried herbs and whole peppercorns
Honey (and the jar I found in Mum’s pantry)
Your homework: pick just one of these and start this week. Then tell me in the comments which one you started with, which state you’re in, and whether you’ve ever been cut off by a flood, fire or cyclone. I read every single one with my morning cuppa.
Next time: which tins are worth keeping, and which ones are quietly wasting your money.

Storage times are general guides. Always throw out tins that are bulging, leaking, rusted or dented along the seam. Honey isn’t suitable for babies under 12 months.
