How New Zealand's Biggest Pottery Empire Quietly Lost Everything: Crown Lynn Ten million pieces a year, in a country of fewer than three million people. Crown Lynn wasn't just a pottery — it was the nation's table, the place where Māori whānau fired its cups. The largest pottery producer in the Southern Hemisphere. But on 5 May 1989, with import licensing gone, Ceramco announced the New Lynn factory would close. About 220 jobs went. The kilns went cold. The moulds went quiet. Today, the factory is gone. A museum stands at 8 Ambrico Place beside New Lynn's last brick kiln. In 2022, one of its swans sold for $6,150. This is the story of how protection built an empire — and what that swan says about value we recognise too late. This is not just the story of Crown Lynn. It's the story of the names never stamped on what we use. #CrownLynn #CrownLynnPottery #LostNewZealand #NZHistory #RiseAndFall #NewZealand
