Lydney is another course that is fairly close to me but being 9 holes it's one I'd put off visiting as I prefer playing a full 18. Having played another course earlier in very pleasant conditions, I thought I'd try Lydney to utilise the nice weather. It wasn't forecast, but the wind really picked up which I don't mind playing in, but it doesn't do good things for the sound quality.
The course is located just outside Lydney on a newish site on Naas Lane and has been here since 2011. The club was founded back in 1909 with a 9 hole course situated on Watery Lane on the Lydney Park Estate. This was then moved to Camp Farm in the 1920s until its move to the current site around 90 years later. The "new" 9 hole course offers USGA standard greens with several holes offering different tee options to make a full 18 hole course. This is the option I took on my visit to experience all it has to offer.
I'd heard a key selling point for Lydney is its quirky greens, and once out on the course this is certainly true. The course itself is relatively flat overall but with a few contours to contend with on several holes, but the greens are where the fun really starts. All in great condition overall when I played but very few flat putts. Several of the greens have multiple tiers and most have really challenging borrows. The average gimmie length here must be reduced quite a bit!
Playing on a sunny August day, the course naturally was busy and I did rush with many groups out, certainly on the front 9. This didn't give me as much time to grab as much footage as I normally do but hopefully the video conveys what the course is about. Similarly the wind was very strong and the audio was a struggle to capture. With the wind and the open nature of much of the course, it really showed that this 9 hole course has teeth and the difference playing the down and upwind holes was considerable.
I really enjoyed the round here despite the wind and hopefully this comes over in the video. I'd thoroughly recommend the course with it being good value, friendly but mostly to test yourself on the greens! Great fun and a super little course 👍🌞🏌️⛳
