EMPTY PANAMA — Villas Cost $49,000 But Nobody Wants Them
Back home, $50,000 is a down payment, if that. In Panama it can buy the whole house and the land under it. In San Pablo Viejo, on the edge of David, houses have been listed for around $35,000, and in Santiago de Veraguas an older two or three bedroom block house sells from around $40,000 to $50,000. Every town on this list has houses under $50,000 that sit waiting for a buyer, and each one sits empty for a different reason: water, heat, rain, earthquakes, distance to a hospital, or paperwork. This video names the reason in every town, so you can decide whether you can live with it.
Before you comment: yes, foreigners can own titled property in Panama in their own name, with the same title a Panamanian gets. The exceptions are rights-of-possession land, land within 10 kilometers of a border, and some coastal and island land. Always have a Panamanian lawyer run a title search at the Registro Público, and buy only titled property. All prices are in US dollars, because that is Panama’s local currency.
