There are some people we learn to live without long before we're ready to live in a world without them. Somewhere in the World came from a realization I didn't fully understand until many years after losing someone I had loved since I was very young. I had moved forward. I built another life. I became a mother. Years passed. Our roads went in completely different directions. I didn't need him to come back. I didn't need him to choose me. I didn't even need to hear his voice. I just needed him to be somewhere in the world. For years, there was something quietly comforting about believing he was out there living his own life. I had heard he was doing better. I heard that music had become part of his life again. So somewhere in my mind, I pictured him under another sunrise, beneath the same moon, building a life that had nothing to do with mine. And somehow... that was enough. “You didn't have to come back to me You didn't have to call I just needed there to be Somewhere you existed at all.” I never realized how much peace his existence gave me until he was gone. That's when I learned there is a kind of grief that isn't about losing the future you planned together. Sometimes you're grieving the future they never got to have. I wish he'd had more mornings. I wish he'd gotten older. I wish there were more stories in his life that I would never know. I wish somewhere there were an old guitar he had played for decades. I wish he had gotten the chance to become an old man. Not for me. For him. And perhaps that's what took me so many years to understand. I wasn't waiting for him to return. I wasn't asking life to give me another road. There was simply comfort in knowing that somewhere on this enormous Earth was another human being who had once known the girl I used to be. We didn't have to share a life. We only had to share a world. And then one day, we didn't anymore. “I learned the hardest kind of loss Is losing what you weren't keeping Not a future, not forever Not the life we didn't choose Just the quiet consolation That somewhere there was you.” This song doesn't have a lesson wrapped neatly around the grief. It doesn't need one. Sometimes healing is simply understanding what you've been mourning all along. And tonight, I finally do. I didn't need another chance. I didn't need another road. I just needed to know... you were still here.
