Some questions don't have answers. For years, I thought perhaps if I looked backward long enough, remembered enough, or rearranged the pieces enough, I could somehow understand how the story might have ended differently. But there are some things we simply never get to know. I'll Never Know What Could Have Been is about loving someone from your past who died before there was ever a chance to have the conversation you thought there would someday be time for. We were young. We went down different roads. Life happened. And somewhere along the way, I heard you were doing better. I heard there was music in your life again. I believed you were far away, building another chapter of your story. I didn't know you had come home. I didn't know what you were going through. And by the time I learned the truth, there was nothing I could do. For years, grief turned that lack of knowledge into questions. What if I'd known? What if we'd spoken? What if I'd reached out? What if we'd finally forgiven each other? What if I'd somehow arrived in time? But healing has required me to recognize something important: I only knew what I knew then. I cannot give my younger self information she didn't have and then punish her for failing to act on it. “I can't keep rewriting history To make myself arrive somehow I only knew what I knew then And I only have the truth I know now.” Maybe that's one of the hardest parts of grief. Sometimes there isn't a final conversation. Sometimes there isn't a proper goodbye. Sometimes a story simply stops, leaving the people who remain to make peace with unanswered questions. I'm finally learning that “I don't know” can be an answer. I don't know what would have happened if our paths had crossed again. I don't know what we would have said. I don't know whether we would have become friends, strangers, or something somewhere in between. And I will never know what could have been. But after all these years, there is something I do know: You mattered to me. You were part of the girl I was. You became part of the woman I grew into. And I can love the road behind me without spending the rest of my life standing at its door. So, this song isn't about finding the answer anymore. It's about finally releasing the question. I'll never know what could have been. But I know what you meant to me. And perhaps most importantly... I forgive myself for what I could not know.
