Learning how to drop in on a BMX bike can be intimidating, but the actual technique is much easier than it looks. In this beginner BMX tutorial, I'll show you how to drop in—or roll in—on a quarter pipe and explain the body position that makes it easier. If possible, start on a 3–4 ft quarter pipe and work your way up as your confidence improves. In this tutorial: • How to approach the quarter pipe • How to turn your front wheel into the transition • Where to position your weight • Why bent knees are important • How your bunny hop landing position can help • Why you shouldn't lean too far forward or backward • How to build confidence for your first drop-in • Why having a run-up can make learning easier One of my biggest tips is to think about the position you're in when you LAND a bunny hop. Knees bent, weight centered and ready to absorb the transition—that's roughly where you want your body when rolling into the ramp. For most beginners, the hardest part isn't the technique. It's committing to it. Start on a smaller quarter pipe, get comfortable on your bike before approaching the ramp, keep your weight centered and confidently turn into the transition. Once you're comfortable dropping in, you'll be able to carry speed through the skatepark and start connecting complete lines.
